What exactly are handicap bets?

In betting, how does the handicap work? Often, we find that betting on the match's winning market is quite uneven in favor of one of the competitors, so betting on the favorite has very little value, and if we want to earn real money, we have to bet on an underdog with a low probability of winning. This is what happens, for example, when clubs like Barcelona or Real Madrid host teams from the lower league, when Nadal makes his tournament debut against an opponent who has fallen in the rankings, or in many other sports. We can increase our odds by betting on handicap markets.

What is the betting handicap?

In betting, a handicap is the advantage or disadvantage we give a wager to balance the chance of it happening, a betting market in which we may add goals or points to the weaker challenger or take them from the stronger one. This handicap is applied from the start of the game, and when the possibilities of success of both sides are equalized, so are the odds. Thus, betting on the favorite with a handicap will be more rewarding than betting on the match winner; while betting on the underdog reduces the danger of losing.

Which sports offer handicap betting?

We may wager with a handicap on almost every sport in which two teams or players compete against each other, giving us a wide range of alternatives. For example, in soccer, futsal, handball, field hockey, or water polo, handicap bets are on goals; in basketball, American soccer, or rugby, handicap bets are on points; in tennis, the white label casino games or sets handicap, in darts, the sets handicap, in snooker, the frames handicap, and so on.

Different types of handicaps in betting

When it comes to handicaps, we have two options: European and Asian. It should be noted that not all bookies provide both services. While the European handicap is accessible at all bookies, the Asian handicap is not. Both are equally fascinating, and we might argue that the European handicap is simpler to grasp, whilst the Asian handicap provides us with many more alternatives, making it slightly more difficult to grasp.

Handicap Europe

To establish whether the bet is a winner or a loser, just subtract or add the handicap amount to the final outcome. It is often known as a "three-way handicap," despite the fact that there are only two outcomes: win or lose the bet. In the event of a tie, the bet is lost. You can add or deduct the handicap from a home victory, away win, or draw, with the handicap being added to the loser's score in the case of draws.

EUROPEAN HANDICAP EXAMPLE

We placed a wager on team A with a European handicap of -1. The bet is a winner if team A wins by two goals or more, but a loser if it loses, draws, or wins by the minimum. Under the latter situation, when we deduct the goal that we subtract with the handicap, the result is a draw, which is a losing bet in the European handicap.

Asian Disability

It functions similarly to the European handicap, with the added benefit that the wager is canceled in the event of a tie, giving the player an advantage, however in the same event, the Asian handicap has lower odds than the European handicap. We may also bet positive and negative, but with the addition of up to four different types of Asian handicap.

Full Asian handicap: the easiest, simply add or deduct the amount of goals or points stated by the handicap from the final score. If there is a tie after adding it, the bet is invalid.

EXAMPLE

We bet on team A again, but this time with an Asian handicap of -1. Again, we need team A to win by two goals or more for the bet to be a winner, with the bet losing if this team loses or draws. If they win by the minimum, the bet is a tie, therefore with the full Asian handicap, the bet is worthless and the bookmaker refunds the money wagered.

Another factor is that the Asian handicap +1 was gambled on for the B team. As in the prior scenario, if they lose by the bare minimum, the wager is worthless, because adding that goal results in a tie. The bet will be a winner if team B wins or draws, but it will be a loser if team A wins by two goals or more. To remove the potential of a tie, we can utilize the average Asian handicap.

EXAMPLE

We bet on team A with an Asian handicap of +1.5, which means we will add 1.5 goals to their ultimate score. If they lose by one goal, the wager is a winner, regardless of whether they draw or lose. However, if it loses by two goals or more, we lose the bet. When betting on the Asian handicap, the issue is similar: we remove that goal and a half from team A's final score, therefore they must win by two goals or more. Any other outcome will result in a loss of the stake. It is comparable to the European handicap, with the exception that there is no possibility of a draw.

Asian quarter handicap: a double bet in which half of the money is wagered on a full handicap and the other half on a half handicap. As a result, quarter handicaps like +1.25 show as (1/1.5 or +1/+1.5). The bet might be a winner, a loser, or a partial winner or loser.

EXAMPLE

Because there are two bets in one, half of the money wagered is allocated to one market and the other to the other. If you wager £10 on team A with an Asian handicap of -0.25, you are betting £5 on -0.5 and £5 on 0.0.

As a result, the first bet is a winner if team A wins and a loss in all other instances, but the second bet is a winner if team A wins, void if they draw, and a loser if they lose. The combination of these two bets will decide how much money you receive with your winning wager and if you are eligible for a refund if you do not win. When we bet on +0.75, the same thing happens: half of the wager is placed on +1, while the other half is placed on +0.5.

Thus, the first bet is a winner if the team we are betting on wins or draws, a void if it loses by one goal, and a loss if it loses by more than one goal. The +0.5 bet, on the other hand, will be green if the team wins or draws and red if it loses. We sum the two outcomes to get the bet's profit or, if it went poorly, the portion that we can recoup if we haven't lost everything. Asian Handicap 0.0: a wager in which no goals are added or subtracted from the final score.

EXAMPLE

If we bet on team A with an Asian handicap of 0.0, the bet is a winner if team A wins, a loss if it loses, and invalid if there is a draw, thus the bookmaker will return the money staked. It is the only handicap in which "0 goals" are not added to the final score.

The distinction between Asian and European handicaps

The Asian handicap differs from the European handicap in that when we wager +1, -1, +2, -2,... and a draw happens, our bet is void rather than failed or successful. With a 2-1 outcome in the Real Madrid - Getafe match, a Madrid HE-1 bet is unsuccessful, while a Madrid HA-1 bet is invalid.

It is usually easy to distinguish between them since the bookmaker states it, but if it does not, as long as it is expressed as 1:0, 2:0, 0:1, 0:2,... or contains the possibility of a draw, it is a European handicap. It is an Asian handicap if it does not contain a draw option and only gives you the choice of one or the other winning.
